You mean this ol' thing?

BAAAAAAACK! And I said "tap-tap" so get out of my seat.

Becky with the good hair.

'Here's what I've been up to since those two video blogs exhausted me into hibernation six months ago.
  • Taking lunchtime baths
  • Accusing Andy of being a bad driver
  • Getting accused by Andy of being a bad driver
  • Jumping in the Puget Sound
  • Doing high-kicks during evening walks around the neighborhood
  • Googling "Brazilian Butt Lift Celebrities." I even started a blog post about it that I never finished...see below.

I Can't Stop Googling Brazilian Butt Lifts

Yep. Of all the controversial topics to bring me out of retirement, this is it. Trust me, I'm as not surprised as you are.

The other day, whilst browsing the 'Bravo Real Housewives' subreddit, I came across a post discussing whether any of 'the wives' might have had a Brazilian Butt Lift procedure.

Now, I've heard of Brazilian Butt Lifts before, and in the back of my mind I've always known that the Kardashian-inspired, bubble booty trend of the 2010s must involve plastic surgery, but I've never truly confronted the reality of the Brazilian Butt Lift until now.

After scrolling through various Google image searches and many horrendous post-op photographs, I'm equal parts disgusted and amazed. I find these augmented butts both hideous and beautiful. The idea of people carving bits of fat out of their arms in order to sculpt and adhere an oversized cartoon bottom onto their actual bottom is FASCINATING. In a way, it's art.

Butt Lifts are also proof that being stick thin is not cool anymore. Scrawny butts are so two thousand and eight. These days, it's all about the waist trainers and butts made of repurposed skin. Perhaps these celebs are onto something. Perhaps it's time we all "upcycle" our muffin tops.

  • Eating fake sausage mixed with roasted vegetables mixed with rice pilaf
  • Using napkins as toilet paper (with plans to buy toilet paper soon)
  • Keeping my ingrown toenail at bay
  • Wearing shorts
  • Wearing Kylie-inspired lipstick
  • Working

In other news, RHONY is back. Jo Jo is coming to Bumbershoot. The Mariners' CEO quit. The viaduct is closed for two weeks. The sun is out. I ordered more essential oils for the diffuser. Nobody can shut up about Donald Trump. My sister had a baby named Harry. I cleaned my water bottle. Andy discovered JCrew and puts the emphasis on the J ("How come you never told me about JAY-crew before?"). Rob Kardashian lost 50 pounds. Summer is just around the corner.

Back in a bit,

Margaret

Things I don't understand

I picked my nose after dicing a jalepeno pepper and paid the price. Right now, as I type this, my right nostril is burning like charcoal and my eye is raining hot acid tears.

Perhaps Skeegles is punishing me for nose-picking. I've tried so hard to quit, particularly now that I live in an apartment with so much passing foot traffic outside the living room windows, but it's just so hardwired in me. I've been picking since I was a child! I picked in the womb!

OK, enough smalltalk. The 'meat' of this post is going to be a list of things I don't understand.

Things I don't understand:

  • How the Internet works
  • Why operas are considered good
  • Justin Bieber's popularity (I love 99% of pop music, but have never liked his songs)
  • Gaucho pants
  • Space
  • Fire
  • How glass is actually just hot sand
  • The stock market

Stocks! Shares! Bonds! Currency! Derivatives!
Sell! Buy! Buy! Sell!
Ding-a-ling-a-ling! Money money money!
Computer screens!
Shouting!
Hand gestures!
STOCK MARKET!

Yours,
Margaret

P.S. Skeegles is the name of the divine being, the universal lifeforce, the prime mover, the Creator, Yahweh, Lord, God—whatever you want to call it—in the religion my friends and I made up back in sixth grade. But as an avid Madgespace reader, you should know that by now.

P.P.S. What happens if you lie when someone asks you to 'swear on Skeegles'? If caught, you must shave off your eyebrows.

Add these things to your calendar

Over the past few years, I've found myself circling round to the same question over and over again:

Who accredits the accreditors? Is there an accreditation accreditation association?

Andy and I have discussed it and we reckon that it must be the government.

Well, doesn't look like that's going to be enough for a full blog post. Let's try this:

Add these things to your calendar:

  • NOV 3: The release of Leah Remini's book / scientology exposé
  • NOV 4: Game 7 of the World Series
  • NOV 6: New James Bold film out in cinemas
  • NOV 20: 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay' Part 2 out in cinemas
  • DEC 4: New 'Macbeth' film out in cinemas
  • DEC 25: Christmas / Birth of Kim K's second child (scheduled C-section for Xmas morn)
  • DEC 26: England v. South Africa cricket

It's always good to have things to look forward to. Also, I don't know the exact date, but satsumas are going to start appearing in stores soon I think.

P.S. Noticed my left shoulder is way higher than my right. Worried it may be scoliosis. Perhaps they didn't test me correctly back in seventh grade.

My rules for cooking

In fourth grade I invented the best food ever:

Shell pasta smothered in Chivo.

For those of you who aren't familiar, Chivo—traditionally a baked potato topping—is a thick sour cream substitute flavored with chives. I think it's been discontinued.

The Chivo had a way of packing itself perfectly into every nook and cranny of the conchiglie, turning each bite into a dairy-free sour cream explosion.

It was groundbreaking gastronomy way before its time.

Image via CalorieCount.com

Since those days of early culinary experimentation, I've developed a slightly more sophisticated approach to cooking. But only slightly.

MARGARET'S RULES FOR COOKING:

  • Season every component of the dish individually before combining them
  • Keep everything PIPING HOT
  • Chop things up really small
  • Don't skimp on the onions
  • Grind some black pepper over everything

I would also recommend that you keep a pizza (Freschetta if you're in the US, ChicagoTown if you're in the UK) in the freezer at all times just in case.

Goodnight,
Margaret

Food trend alert: store-bought PB&Js

I've noticed a new food trend since my move back to America. Store-bought PB&Js. They're everywhere. In the PCC deli. In Starbucks bento boxes. On the menu at your local sandwich joint.

What does this say about our society?
  1. We're that lazy
  2. We think that nostalgia = good (seen across millennial culture, not just in the culinary world)
But allow me to step down off my high llama for a second. I love this trend. Heck, I've been singing Uncrustables' praises for years now. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are delicious and, for those rare occasions when curried tempeh just won't cut it, I'm willing to pay $4 for one from PCC.

Image by Evan-Amos via Wikimedia Commons

Some more useful information relating to PB&Js:
  • The first reference of peanut butter paired with jelly on bread to be published in the United States was by Julia Davis Chandler in 1901 in the Boston Cooking-School Magazine of Culinary Science and Domestic Economics. (via Wikipedia)
  • Jam is made from crushed fruit, whereas jelly is made from fruit juice.
  • The average American eats 1,500 PB&Js before the age of 18. (via Thrillist)
  • April 2nd is National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day.
  • Arachibutyrophobia is the fear of getting peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth.

I hope we all learned something here today.

Goodbye,
Margaret

P.S. After its Emmy win, Andy and I decided to start watching 'Veep.' Our verdict? Hilarious. I recommend.

Two more days of court-ordered blogging

In just two days, my year of daily blogging ends. Although I hope to continue blogging every weekday into the vast, unknowable future, the end of my Year-28 Challenge has left me feeling...

...RELIEVED!

It's been good. It's been bad. It's been tedious.

In honor of the Emmys, I'm hosting my own little awards ceremony tonight in which all the nominees are ME.

Most mouth-watering:

Best celebrity-related post:

Best video blog:

Things I will NEVER do

  • Pronounce poinsettia the correct way (point-set-EE-uh)
  • Be able to pull off a jumpsuit :(
  • Put my children on a leash
  • Get a six-inch Subway sandwich
  • Download the Facebook mobile app
  • Go bungee jumping
  • Think highly of white chocolate
  • Say no to a back massage
  • Get on someone's shoulders in the swimming pool and do a "chicken fight"
  • Pinch a person for not wearing green on St. Patrick's Day, which is a cruel tradition that exists only in America

Grandma Martha and I promised ourselves we'd try to stay awake until 9pm. It's 7:43pm now. I doubt we'll make it. She's in her room watching "The Proposal" starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. I'm at the kitchen table, typing this blog post and nibbling on some Trader Joe's olive oil popcorn. And by nibbling, I mean shoving in my face by the handful. Now that's something I'll never do—nibble popcorn one kernel at a time. Life's too short to eat popcorn one kernel at a time.

Love ya,

Underrated and overrated TV shows

UNDERRATED

Boardwalk Empire

Obviously this show achieved a decent level of critical acclaim, but it never got the massive following it deserved. There were some truly gripping scenes through its five seasons, but even its less-than-stellar episodes were consistently very very good. Plus, it had Richard Harrow in it, who is my favorite character to be in a TV show ever. PLUS, it had this scene, which Andy and I recite to each other often.

Recess

There was something about Recess that struck a chord with my generation. We were all at the perfect age for it when it came out. But if you aren't in your late 20s right now, you probably haven't even heard of it.

The Americans

Again, like Boardwalk, this show is well liked by critics. Yet, because it's on FX and not HBO, it's still off a lot of people's radars.

Young Americans

This show on the CW only lasted one season, back in 2000, but it was great. It was about a posh boys boarding school. One of the boys was actually a girl disguised as a boy. It was totally before its time.

(Also, it was sponsored by CocaCola and there were tons of scenes of the characters drinking Coke. People made fun of it, but I didn't mind because I like watching people drink Coke. I imagine how delicious it must taste and how satisfying the carbonation must be and it makes me feel happy for them. So THERE!)

OVERRATED

Homeland

I bailed on this in the middle of the first season. It was so overacted and there was no chemistry between Claire Danes and the guy. A few seasons later, everyone bailed on it and I felt vindicated.

House of Cards

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE it. But it's still overrated. You know it is. That last season was insane and pretty bad in some parts.

How I Met Your Mother

Ugh. Sitcom. Laugh track. Never could get into it.

True Blood

Remember the vampire years? The world really liked vampires there for a while. This show was OK, but it wasn't as good as people thought.

I wish those lists were longer, but there's a lot of things that I wish were true that aren't. That's life.

Margaret

Best laid plans

After a week in Seaside, Andy and I are back in our cozy apartment on Alki. He's assembling a shoe rack. I have a tea towel tied around my head like Rosie the Riveter (bowl cut has grown horribly long and is poking me in the eyes.)

I don't have any ideas for what to write tonight. I'm tired and my ear/nose/throat canals are unusually dry. Itchy dry. Uncomfortable.

So, instead of the usual highly entertaining post, I'm going to lay out my plans for the future. Here it goes.

Short term

  • Put the duvet cover on the duvet (ugh - the worst).
  • Get a haircut.
  • Take the Amazon boxes out to the recycling.
  • Watch the latest America's Next Top Model.

Medium term

  • Continue to blog 'every day' after my Year-28 Challenge ends, except give myself the weekends off.
  • Buy a conehead Halloween costume, for old time's sake.
  • Buy a rug.
  • Buy a mini, indoor palm tree.
  • Get a response from an A-list celebrity on Twitter.

Long term

  • Go to Japan.
  • Raise a litter of children, one of whom trains as a massage therapist.
  • Put sunscreen on Andy's bald head every summer until he dies.

Monday tomorrow. Let's make it a productive one. Drink lots of coffee. Treat yourself to a chilled Kit-Kat in the afternoon. You know the drill.

Love,
Margaret

P.S. Are you Team Miley or Team Nicki? I think it's obvious whose team I'm on.

Wisdom from Maria

My cousin Maria is as wise as they come.

Here are her words of wisdom for you all on this Friday evening:

  • Ask to see a manager if your coupon's expired.

  • If you tie your shoes too tight, there's a good chance that over time you'll get a bone spur. The bone spurs can mess with your arteries and it's really painful.

  • You're the only one that decides what to put in your mouth.

  • You've heard it before, but it's really true: people do start to resemble their pets over time. Your hair...the way you squint your eyes just so...

  • People are only listening to 1/3 of what you're saying no matter what it is you're talking about.

  • If you eat too much salt one day, the next day you should eat bananas and drink coconut water.

  • If you're really tired, do a backbend. It's like having a shot of espresso. The same is true of an orange.

  • Buy ten pairs of sunglasses when you're at the 99 cent store. You'll never feel bad when you sit on them or lose them.

  • Famous people are tiny in real life. Almost all of them.

  • If someone's sitting down and you're having a conversation with them, sit or squat down so that you're at their level. Particularly if you're speaking to an older person.
Diane Lane = one of those celebs who is extra tiny in real life.
Also, is it just me or does that dog look like John Cusack?

Thanks, Maria!

Goodnight,
Margaret

Beach bum

A turkey will eat grain until it explodes if you let it. They don't get full. That's me with raspberries. I bought a flat of them an hour ago and they're gone now.

Well, I'm officially a beach bum. Today, after a sweaty walk back to the apartment carrying six month's worth of toilet paper, I jumped in the Puget Sound all by my lonesome. Just threw my swimsuit on, crossed the street and leapt right in. Didn't even bother to put on flip-fops.

My hair is salty. My swimsuit smells like seaweed. There's sand in the bathtub. Next thing you know I'll be hanging a 'sandy toes welcome' sign above the front door and nailing a decorative miniature surfboard to the wall.

Things I may do now that I live by the beach:

  • Buy a pink flamingo lawn ornament to sit by the window.
  • Walk the beach in my housecoat (aka duster) in the middle of the night just to scare people.
  • Get a bike radio and cruise the strip.
  • Film a new DJ Polite / Mogsquisha video (we have an idea)
  • Take steel drum lessons.

What's that? You want to see my housecoat? Oh I suppose. Because you asked.

Thanks to my sis Anna who gave this to me as a housewarming gift. She's the best!

Love,
Margaret

Of the day

Highlight of the day: Waking up to see that Andy Cohen of Bravo fame had commented on my Instagram post.

Hilarious moment of the day: My colleagues (aka sistahs) and I drawing a cartoon sock in PowerPoint. You had to be there.

Scary/cool news of the day: A hacker has figured out how to locate, unlock and start GM vehicles remotely.

True confession of the day: Anna and I both admitting we love the song 'All of Me' by John Legend.

Celebrity gossip of the day: Zayn Malik (One Direction) and Perrie Edwards (Little Mix) are dunzo. Take a number, you two. Tis the summer of celeb breakups.

Snack of the day: Bread.

Beverage of the day: Coffee.

Essential clothing item of the day: Close-toed shoes! Slap my butt and call me a horse camper, but today was not a day of flip flops. Firstly, I had to lift some heavy items (moving into new apt.). Secondly, it rained a bit.

Relief of the day: Getting to shut this laptop and go to bed! The last time I was this tired was when I pulled an all-nighter to read 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' ("Number 4" to us superfans) in 9th grade. Totally worth it. It's still my favorite in the series.

Sweet dreams,
Margaret

Information for your Saturday

What emoji do you wish existed but doesn't?

A lot of people have expressed to me the need for a 'fingers crossed' emoji. I agree, and I can't believe it doesn't already exist.

Siiiiiiigh. It's one of those post-migraine, achy shoulder, listen to Miley, eat Goldfish crackers, think about going for a walk kind of nights. Despite a nap and some medicine, I'm not 100% myself. As my sisters tell their kiddos, "you know your body" and I indeed know that I'm not firing on all cylinders.

In lieu of a blog topic, I'm going to present a list of unrelated information.

  • Andy's in Birmingham (pronounced Birming-um) stalking the English cricket team. His goal is to get a picture with Joe Root aka Rooty (pronounced Roo-teh).
  • I've been perusing retro glassware on Ebay. There's something about vintage drinking glasses that makes me so happy to be alive.
  • Episode 0 of Project Runway season 14 (I know, Tim Gunn must be 150 by now), 'The Road to the Runway', is now available to stream on Lifetime.com (for US viewers). It's the episode where they introduce you to all the designers. Looks like it's going to be a pretty great season.
  • I move into the new apartment next Wednesday.
  • My family has always used Comet to clean the bathtub. First, you shake the abrasive bleach powder out across the tub. You try to get it to stick to the sides, where the dirt ring is most prominent, but it always slides down. Next, you add a bit of water so that the powder turns to paste. Finally, you scour. Down on hands and knees with an industrial brush, you scrub until your knuckles scrape raw and the chemicals begin to eat away at your fingernails. Conclusion: this method sucks. Worst of all, years of Comet-use have taken the varnish off the tub, making it even more susceptible to dirt stains. It's 2015; there must be a better way!
Since I couldn't find a photo of Comet, here's the first England cricket team to tour Southern Australia. 1861

5 reasons I'm annoying

I've never been this social in my life. In the past two weeks I've seen more people and attended more gatherings than I have in the past two years. Is that an exaggeration? Yes. But only just.

As you know, I'm an introvert masquerading as an extrovert. So, naturally I have mixed feelings about my newfound social calendar. On the one hand, changing out of my night shirt, leaving the house and talking to people is exhausting. On the other hand, it's fun and fulfilling. Plus, I feel like I've reached a stage in my life where every moment counts. There should be no wasted days. I'm almost 29!

Anyway, I promised you a list and a list you shall get.

5 reasons I'm annoying

1. I take waaaay too many items to the self-checkout at the grocery store. People line up behind me with a single carton of milk and there I am spending several minutes trying to look up the code for green onions, the first of 40 items in my basket.

2. Self pity. I feel sorry for myself at least three times a day and, if given an audience, I will vocalize my feelings.

3. I get mad when people won't let me use their highly personal / embarrassing stories as material for this blog. I have no dignity; so why should you?

4. I use emdashes—the large dashes bookending this interjection—way too much. Can't help it. I'm addicted to them!

5. I talk about Andy too much. Ugh, how annoying. It's annoying that I even added this to the list, but I couldn't think of a fifth reason. Also, it's true.

What else is new? I've started smearing Vaseline under my eyes every night. I'm signing a lease on an apartment in West Seattle tomorrow. My 'To Do' list is miles long. I continually waver between extreme confidence and extreme self-doubt. I'm sorry I ever underestimated Jason Derulo.

Ciao,
Margaret

P.S. I want to kick the song 'Honey I'm Good' in it's Cotton-Eye Joe face.

Get off the fence

"We should really come here and play tennis sometime."

That, I reckon, is the number one thing people say that they never end up following through on. I'm as guilty of this as anyone.

But let's end it now, America. The buck stops here.

Grab your rackets, go to that cute park and play some damn tennis!

Image by Vladsinger via Wikimedia Commons

Also, if you're on the fence about any of the following, here's the nudge you need:

  • Build/get a fire pit — YES, do it.
  • Quit your job — YES, do it. Try securing another job first though.
  • Get bangs (fringe) — NO. Now's not the right time. Wait until autumn when the weather changes. Too hot for bangs right now.
  • Clean out your wallet — It can wait.
  • Go camping — YES, do it. Don't overthink it. Don't overpack.
  • Wash your sheets — It can wait.
  • Buy a kayak — YES, do it.
  • Move to a new city — YES, do it.
  • Tell whoever you're mad at that you're mad at them — NO. Just don't be mad. Life's too short.

In other news, I bought a "night shirt" (basically a long, cotton smock) from The Gap. It's very old fashioned. Very ma-in-her-kerchief-and-I-in-my-cap. Like something Laura Ingalls Wilder would wear. I LOVE it.

Goodnight,
Margaret

Furniture talk

As you know, each week we choose a theme and bring you different kinds of stories on that theme. Today's post: home furnishings. News, anecdotes and opinions on various topics relating to home furnishings—when home decor goes right, when it goes wrong and what happens when the owner of a Persian rug shop asks you to be his butler.

I'm Margaret Kay. Stay with us.

  • Will futons make a comeback? It's fair to say they are HIGHLY uncomfortable.
  • Andy and I once bought a lampshade (actually, you know about it already) from a company called Smarty Lamps. Years later they followed me on Twitter. How did they know?
  • My advice for all the young 20-somethings out there starting out on their own: invest in an air mattress. You'll feel so prepared and hospitable when you have guests.
  • Back in 2010, Andy got a job as a butler in a Persian rug shop. What business does a butler have in a rug shop, you ask? Why, to fetch the owner a cup of tea whenever he rings his desk bell. Andy reconsidered and quit before his first day.
  • One time Barbie and I bought a faux bearskin rug at Costco. We were poor college students and it was like $70, but we just had to have it. Turned out to be a wonderful investment. We loved that thing like a child.
  • There used to be a furniture store in Seattle just off the Mercer exist called 'Far Fetched'. But on the sign, the "c" was a moon, so I always thought it was called 'Far Fet Hed'.

This blog post was produced today by Margaret Kay, with Grandma Martha, Andy Williamson and Barbie Solbakken. Our senior producer is Fart Fet Hed. Booter Fitzpatrick is our production manager. Bethenny is our office manager. Production help from Smarty Lamps.

Madgespace is distributed by Blogger. Management oversight by our boss, Persian rug shop owner in Edinburgh.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm glad that's over. ROUGH blog post tonight. Sehr rough.

But alas, tomorrow's a new day.

Sleep well!

Goodnight,
Margaret

Keep it simple

A grilled cheese is made of three ingredients: butter, white bread and American cheese. That's it. That's the way it is and always should be. Forget your aged cheddars and artisan rosemary loafs. A grilled cheese, like many of life's little delights, is a dish best served basic.

Yes, this plastic cheese is gross. But for some reason it just works in a grilled cheese. Grilled cheeses are its only reason for existence, and it's important we respect that.

Other items that fall into the 'keep it simple' category include:
  • Pizza. Enough with the broccoli for Christ's sake. And no slimy roasted zucchini either. Barbecue sauce? Get out. Get out of my house immediately.
  • Eyebrows. Don't do too much to those guys, or else they'll turn on you and you'll never be able to get them back. If in doubt, just neglect them.
  • Jeans. A few small rips is OK, but avoid the ones with bleached-in crease marks and fake paint splatter everywhere.
  • Email font. Are you one of those people who's changed their default email font to something "fun" like Bradley Hand in turquoise or Papyrus in a vibrant fuchsia? Yeah. We're all judging you.
Cheers,
Margaret

Here's to you, Rich Kay!

Hey everyone on Facebook, I'll see your vintage dad snaps and raise you an entire blog post dedicated to Rich Kay himself.

  • One of the only people in the world who banks with Key Bank.
  • Never lets a cold, day-old cup of coffee go to waste.
  • Knew the Dixie Chicks were going to be big years in advance.
  • Can dance 'the Roger Rabbit'.
  • Once got really into a children's chapter book series called 'Hank the Cowdog'.
  • An absolute whiz at Photoshop.
  • Nicknames include Duckminister Abbey and Butch.
  • A calming presence to animals and small children.
  • Nonjudgemental.

Here's to you, Dad!

Spokane or bust

I'm going to Spokane this weekend.

Facts about Spokane:
  • It's the second biggest city in Washington.
  • It hosted the 1974 World Expo, and it has THIS bad boy to show for it:
  • Bing Crosby grew up there.
  • Its motto is 'Near Nature. Near Perfect.'
  • It's mentioned in a disproportionally large number of songs ('Jolene' by Zac Brown Band, 'Swear Your Love'  by Kenny Loggins, 'Still a "G" Thang' by Snoop Dogg, 'My Dwarf is Getting Tired' by Ry Cooder....the list goes on!)
Also, this one, which I've been groovin' to for the past few minutes. I really like it. "Wine, wine, wine..."

Another thing about Spokane is that it's much better than people give it credit for.

TTFN,
Margaret

7 rules for summer

It's been a scorcher here in Seattle Kenmore this weekend. The sun has dried up every last bit of energy from my body. I'm ready to watch Silicon Valley and hit the hay.

So, without further ado, please enjoy the following generic blog post.

7 rules for summer

1. Always spring for the waffle cone if given the option. It's money well spent.

2. Refill the ice cub tray if there's less than two cubes left. That's just common courtesy.

3. Buy a thin, crew neck sweatshirt from a thrift shop. Wear it when the wind picks up.

4. Forget about socks and shoes. Wear sandals. Get a sandals tan.

5. Wait to eat dinner until after the sun goes down. Dine al fresco.

6. Walk around your neighborhood at night. Look at the stars.

7. Listen to DJ Polite. Do everything he says.

One more thing. Earlier today, my mom offhandedly mentioned that she used Herbal Essences shampoo back in her young adult years. I said, "Herbal Essences was invented back then? Who knew?" And she said, "Ohhhh yeah, we loved it. Actually that's what I used to give people as a wedding present—a bottle of Herbal Essence, a new towel and a bar of Irish Spring."

Goodnight,
Margaret
