A look at sports in your 30s

Tonight I am honoured to welcome a guest blogger out of Kenmore, Washington (by way of Portarlington, Co. Offaly), the one and only Bobby "B-Bop" Fitzpatrick!!!!!!!!

Taking heed of advice from a fellow guest blogger, Max Kay, I am going to write about what I know. Right now I am at the beginning of my sporting career’s renaissance, so here you have it—a look at sports in your 30s.

I have recently rejoined my old rugby team after taking a hiatus to play somewhat less competitive rugby. I decided to see if I still have it, after being influenced by a supportive wife and a three-year-old daughter, Keeley, who has just started her own sporting career (she has one season of soccer under her belt—where she played for 5 minutes and spent the rest of the season on the sideline waiting for the post-game snack—and is half way through her first basketball season).

Keeley (right), with one of the opposition.

I am six weeks back into it and I have already dealt with more bumps and bruises than I expected. Having said that, I am thoroughly enjoying myself; I love the competitiveness of practice (known as training to our Irish readers) and I love having to strive to be your best at every game because you are up against quality opposition.

Having played at this level before and knowing what ups and downs a long season has to offer, I feel like I have an edge over my younger teammates. They roll out of bed at 10:30 a.m. on game day whereas I’ve been up since 6 a.m. I’ve fed the kids, mowed the lawn, walked the dog and mentally prepared for the tough match ahead (while watching Sesame Street). I have a new appreciation for the opportunity to play, since it’s a little tougher to fit it in these days. Let’s hope this maturity serves me well—and that I make it to the end of the season in one piece.

Slainte,

Bobby

P.S. I know Madge loves P.S.-ing so I decided to add a few.

P.P.S. I feel I need to elaborate on the inspiration I received from Keeley. At her most recent basketball game, she finished by lying in the middle of the court with her head on her hands, completely exhausted from 45 minutes of 3-on-3 basketball (we were low on numbers that day). From now on, if I’m not panting on the ground at the end of a rugby game, I’ll know I didn’t try as hard as Keeley.

P.P.P.S With regards to my supportive wife….the support may dwindle as the trips to the emergency room continue—I’m six weeks in and two trips deep.

From the Archives, Edition 4

Time for another edition of 'From the Archives'! For all you new readers, this is when I 'repurpose' old content (emails, handwritten notes from high school, FB messages etc.) to use as a blog post. It's not lazy, it's upcycling!

Today, I'm featuring an email from 2011 in which I asked my immediate family plus in-laws their thoughts on vitamins.

I must know!

Hi Everybody,

I have been pondering this question for a while now and for the first time in my life, WebMD has not been very helpful.

Should "we" (aka human beings) take vitamins? Or are they a scam? I don't want to waste my money if they are indeed a scam. However, I want to live a long, healthy life and have beautiful skin, nails and hair.

Please weigh-in with any thoughts/knowledge!!!!

Thanks,

Margaret

I'm not sure, but next time I go in and get another Africa shot I will ask my doctor.

Cheers,

Alex

Its a mystery. I have heard both sides - but I would guess to cover your basis you should attempt to get all your vitamins/nutrients from real food rather then pills and if you can't take the vitamins.

Who really knows.  I've heard that 90% is bogus and 10% is good... you just can't pick out the 10% (what and when your body needs it, if that makes sense).  I think a multivitamin can't hurt.

Good tip Anna - getting vits from food is probably the best bet.

Thanks, y'all. I appreciate it! I have an old bottle of multivitamins that I will start working my way through. If I feel different at the end of the bottle, I will amazon.co.uk myself some more!

Alex, let me know what your shot doc says!

Well wasn't that fascinating!

Love,
Margaret

These week's pop-culture recap!

Well, this was certainly amazing:

BUT, even more amazing is the auto-tune remix:

In other news, an English-born octopus named Paul who now resides in Germany has been predicting who's going to win the World Cup games. He has chosen Spain for the final. He was right about Germany's 6 World Cup games thus far, but it should be interesting to see if his powers work for games that the German team are not participating in. If it turns out that Paul truly is psychic, we can finally have an answer to Karl Pilkington's question about Octopie- "do we need 'em"?

In Cristiano Ronaldo news, he had a baby with an unknown gal and has full custody. More importantly, he got mistaken for Jersey Shore's 'The Situation' at a restaurant in New York. HAHAHA!

Lindsay Lohan got sentenced to 90 days in jail! Dino Lohan, her mother, says she is "disappointed with the system". She must be referring to the "system" that punishes those who repeatedly break the law. Officials at the LA County Superior Court are unhappy with the system in a different sense. This New York Times article said the courts in LA are overwhelmed by celebrity offenders. They're dealing with Lohan front and center, but let's not forget Don Johnson, Anna Nicole Smith's doctor, Leif Garret, and Mel Gibson's babymamma. The article describes the chaos that occurs every time Lohan comes and goes from court. In this last hearing, as Lohan exits amid a sea of paparazzi and security, Danny DeVito shows up on the front steps to report for jury duty!

Hmmm, there were some emmy nominations, but I don't really care about that. All I want is for MadMen Season 4 to start immediately. Only 15 days to go!

The US swapped some Russian spies for some US agents. They gave Russia 10 spies back but they only got 4 spies in return. Whaaaaa? Anyway, they will definitely make a movie out of this someday.

Alright, that's all the pop-culture that I can remember for now. I am going to really make it my beeswax to update my blog more. I miss writing. I miss the fame.

As the Irish would say 'Bye buh ba bye bye byebyebyebyebyebye',

Margaret

P.S. Speaking of Irish, I almost forgot the most important pop-culture news of all! My BRO-in-law Bobby is famous! Check it out!
