Heartburn

For the past few days I've been experiencing heartburn.

I know, how poetic.

It all started when a bit of San Pellegrino lemon soda went down the wrong tube. That, combined with a very unhealthy stretch of takeaway curries, Dominoes pizza and afternoon flat whites, has only made it worse.

Indigestion. I'm a person with indigestion. Just proves that you never know what life is going to throw at you.

Speaking of achy hearts and life, today I started to say goodbye to Edinburgh. I've said goodbye to all of my friends; now it's time to bid farewell to the city itself.

This morning Char, William, Freddie, Elsie and I walked up Calton Hill. We endured the freezing winds—both F and E with runny noses—and looked out across Leith and the Firth of Forth.

The scene was painted in typical Edinburgh grey. Grey buildings. Grey clouds. Grey ocean. Edinburgh wears grey well. But I'm excited to return to the Emerald City.

Someone needs a haircut.
Only a month until this crew is back in sunny Sea-town too.

This evening I went for a brief run around the Meadows, stopping at the Quartermile Sainsbury's to buy some antacids. From there I walked the familiar route home across Forrest Road, past Greyfriars Bobby on George IV bridge and along Victoria Terrace to our flat on Upper Bow.

"Take it all in!" I told myself.

Now I'm sitting on the couch typing this, and I can feel the sweat drying on my back. I better get in the shower before the bacne kicks in.

Your pal,
Margaret

P.S. I'm pretty sure these heartburn tablets are just dried squares of toothpaste.

P.P.S. Andy and I starting a new show tonight. 'The Jinx'—and HBO miniseries. I've heard it's good. I'll let you know.

Edinburgh’s Loss is Kenmore’s Gain

Guest blog week continues with Stradbally's finest caricature artist William Donal Kearns sharing his thoughts on my absolute favourite topic of all: ME! Well played, William. Well played.

As the days and minutes tick down to March 17th, reminiscing about the life of ‘Bobo’ (as my son Freddie calls her) in Scotland will be a topic on many people’s minds. Bobo came to sunny Scotland in 2009 as a young, wee, single and ready to mingle American lassie, carrying only a large blue rucksack and her fair share of digestive issues.

Shortly after arriving, Bobo managed to warm the hearts of many people with her friendly, caring and spontaneous personality. And none more than the posh English gentleman who she joined for afternoon tea her first month in Edinburgh. She had him hooked in no time.

After an initial stint of studying to become a minister, Bobo soon decided to ditch that idea and enter the working world. She was an instant hit with her colleagues at LBi but none more so than her close-knit friendship with her fellow ‘divas.’

Next was a (very) short stint at Sainsbury's Bank, which proved to be her last and probably ever job working under someone else’s authority. She strived to become an independent woman and soon began to take matters into her own hands and became her own boss. Safe to say it’s probably the best decision she has ever made for more reasons than one.

Meeting Bobo and having her as part of our lives in Edinburgh has been truly amazing. Not only has she been a great Auntie to our little ones Freddie and Elsie, but also a wonderful friend to us all and not to mention, an ideal babysitter to have around.

Char and I count ourselves lucky to have had her continued support around and loving friendship and look forward to our future with her in the great Pacific Northwest.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your friendship, support and the everlasting memories from your time well spent in Edinburgh.

Ps. Ill leave you with a drawing of Bobo herself and of course the founder of this great name, little Freddie!

Wouldn't it be great if...

My 2.5-year-old nephew Freddie is at that age where he knows what he wants, and he's not afraid to voice it! To avoid the back-and-forth and discourage the whining, a tactic my Mom taught us, and the one I notice my sister using, is to simply agree and say, in a very cheery voice, "Oh yeah, wouldn't that be great?" or "Yum, a cookie does sound good. I wish we had some too." It's pretty disarming.

So, to take a leaf out of that parenting book, instead of phrasing the following list in typical Madgespace whine format, I'm going to keep it positive and take a "Wouldn't it be great?" approach instead. I'm not complaining, I'm dreaming!

Wouldn't it be great if...

...a benevolent rich person gave me a famous painting as a gift, which I could then sell to buy a house and get on that dang property ladder I've heard so much about?

...my significant other enjoyed back massages as much as me?

...Walt Disney World was a two-hour train journey away, and cost just enough to stop me from going weekly, but not too much to stop me from going altogether (about £30)?

...there was a rail bridge over the Atlantic?

...Starbust sold packs of just reds and pinks?*

...we could buy a custom teeth-flossing machine from our dentist that was moulded just for our mouth and would be like one of those circular apple slicers, yet with floss instead of blades?

Like this, but shaped for a mouth and with floss instead of the slicers.

...Pinterest didn't act like it knew me? It don't know me.

...you could edit a tweet? See below.

...."boyfriend" style jeans weren't just a nice concept, but actually looked flattering when worn?

...the first sunny, hot day of the year (75°F/23°C) was always considered an automatic, federally-mandated holiday? At least for people living above a certain latitude?

...if we could go back in time and make fun of people for writing with quills? HAHAHAHHAHAHAH. Losers!

Love,
Margaret

*Edit: Turns out, this exists and I've actually already blogged about it before. Thanks to cousin Clare for letting me know! #GroundhogDay

Snow. Just snow.

Three minutes after I filmed this, the snow stopped. Thirty minutes after that, everything that was stuck to the ground had melted.

GOOD Things About Mondays

Howdy!

Who would have thought that becoming a full-time freelance writer would mean I blog less?

I can't figure out why, now that I have all the time in the world, I still can't drag my lethargic body over to the Macbook for a bit of occasional, recreational blogging. I've been doing yoga AND training for a half marathon, so weird parts of my body hurt. Today, it's my elbow. Maybe typing is simply too strenuous.

Well, in an attempt to dig myself out of this rut, I'm going to cheer you up with some reasons why Mondays are great. That's misleading. Mondays are generally terrible. Still, I am going to cheer you up with a list of some good things about Mondays. Here it is:

1. You can rest assured knowing that the week will get increasingly less productive from this day forward

2. If you live in the UK, Monday is Mad Men day

3. Assuming you did your grocery shopping over the weekend, you should have multiple options for what to eat for dinner. By Friday, it's usually just some cereal or a cheese sandwich made with the heal

4. You get to tell people what you did over the weekend - giving them a glimpse at your true, non-work self

5. You don't even bother with the "I really shouldn't go to Starbucks - it's too expensive - I should really just cut back on the caffeine" charade.

So, what else is new? Well, my new schedule allows me to spend a lot more time with Char and Freddie. Here I am giving the wee guy a bite of my apple:

Isn't he just adorable? Andy has given him the nickname 'The Ginger Fred Man'.

I've also been assisting Francie with her blog, watching The Mindy Project (needed a new show now that Project Runway and Drag Race are over) and making a lot of lattes on our espresso machine (Andy got it two Christmases ago but I'm only now really getting into it).

Tell me about your life!

Cheers,
Smadge
